Anthracite, a hard, glossy, black, high quality coal from Pennsylvania. This occurs in the Upper Carboniferous formations (known as the Pennsylvanian in the USA) and is conventionally dated to about 300 million years ago. Radioactive carbon found in the coal gave dates in the order of 50,000 years.
