The World Around Us

Animal, plant and bacterium cells.

Stylised animal, plant and bacterium cells. In animal and plant cells DNA is housed in the nucleus. Bacterial cells appear simpler but there is no nucleus, the DNA replicating in the cytoplasm. Cells range in size between 1 and 100 microns (micrometers) and are not visible without the aid of a microscope. Diagrams not to scale.
